Society almost ended December 31st, 1999!

Back in 1999, a programmer had an idea. What happened when the two digit date standard went from 99 to 00? Well the world freaked out and

There was a computer flaw, or bug, that may have caused problems when dealing with dates beyond December 31, 1999, which was the Y2K bug. The 1960s and 1980s saw computer engineers use a two-digit code for the year when creating complicated computer programs. We did not include the “19” in the list. “The year 2000” is abbreviated as Y2K. The year 2000 was commonly referred to as Y2K, which was a widespread shortcut to computer programming that was expected to cause widespread havoc during that time period.

Many feared that when the clocks struck midnight on January 1, 2000, many affected computers would use an incorrect date, which would cause them to fail to function properly until the computers’ software was repaired or replaced. There was a computer flaw, or bug, that may have caused problems when dealing with dates beyond December 31, 1999, which was the Y2K bug. A computer programmer realized that 00 might not be interpreted as 2000, but as 1900 as the year 2000 approached. The problem was caused by the fact that storage was expensive on both mainframe computers and later personal computers, from as low as $10 per kilobyte to as high as $100 per kilobyte in some cases. In order to maximize efficiency two digits were used for the date instead of four.

Many people were expecting the Y2K computer “bug” to cause worldwide problems, including the disruption of electricity, water, food delivery, banking, and transportation systems, leading to a breakdown in society as a whole. And as we all found out, there was never any there there.
